Schmidt has been working through a shoulder injury all season long, and his rehab finally came to its last step when he threw in his rehab assignment with Scranton. In four games (three starts), Schmidt allowed five earned runs on 19 hits over 15 innings. He also struck out 20 hitters and walked four as well.
Needing a spot start, the Yanks look toward one of their top prospects. He was expected to be someone that could impact this team all season before his injury in spring training. Now, after snapping a seven-game losing streak on Saturday night at Citi Field, Schmidt is tasked with setting the tone for New York before the bullpen takes over.
It is unknown if Schmidt will have a pitch or innings limit.
As for andrew Velazquez, his time with the Yanks may not be over just yet this season. Since his arrival in pinstripes, the Bronx native has been somewhat of a Cinderella story, making crazy plays at shortstop and coming up with big hits left and right.
