President Joe Biden’s top labor official, Labor secretary Marty Walsh, told Reuters in an interview that he supported classifying a lot of gig workers in the United States as “employees”, suggesting for the first time a potential policy shift that could raise costs for companies that depend on contractors such as Uber and Lyft. “We are looking at it but in a lot of cases gig workers should be classified as employees… in some cases they are treated respectfully and in some cases they are not and I think it has to be consistent across the board,” Walsh said.
Shares of Uber and Lyft fell as much as 8% and 12% respectively after the news.
